Recently, I had an acquaintance of mine find this blog that I haven’t maintained for some time, due to my decision to change blogging platform. Well I think I’m back on WordPress again.
The reason for flip flopping is a result of the free hosted WordPress decision to not allow some web embedded iframe HTML into WordPress. I understand the decision (due to security concerns), but I felt I wanted that functionality, so I went to blogger.
I looked at the overall appearance and found the WordPress theme to be much more pleasing to the eye. Additionally, administration seemed to be more user friendly. Blogger has not evolved as much as I would like it to, so that’s another reason why I’m giving WordPress another go.
One thing I liked about blogger was tight integration with google tools, especially when it came to including photos. However, I can get around that by inserting the img code. Besides, WordPress options once you include the image is really nice (especially the caption).
Oh, the embeds I was referring to earlier …. I don’t know if people found it useful, as I was simply embedding strava, so I don’t think we’ll miss much there.
I haven’t really done very much since blogging on WordPress, but I would like to give some first impressions about this site. Compared to blogger, some of the reporting is amazing … unless I have not found the reporting features of blogger, and that may actually be true.
The reporting is terrific, for a free service. It gives me stats of how many readers hit my site, how many are referred to from other sites (like from Facebook or Twitter). I just think overall, the technical details are very impressive. Now, I haven’t actually done anything graphical yet (let add images), but I’ll get to that in time.
WordPress also has very nice podcast style videos, that give you a nice introduction. The reviews I hear is that WordPress is not as intuitive for bloggers who are just starting out, but I do like the templates they provide. It is very clean, and very slick.
The import feature is really nice … it even imported original images over, and gives you a nice graphical preview of web sites you may be referencing in your blog. I can’t wait until Cali Lewis posts the Wordcamp recordings, which was a bootcamp on utilizing WordPress effectively.
Now that I have played around with wordpress a little more, one more thing I like about this. When you insert an image, it puts the image actually where you want it, and not placing the image at the top of the file. That’s very annoying on blogger. Big kudos to wordpress for this … it really is WYSIWYG!
I’m an avid follower of geekbrief.tv, and the host, Cali Lewis. From that show, I found out about WordPress, which is another online blogging outlet. On that show, she was touting how great this program is, and I remember her mentioning such praise to this, but at the time the show aired, I wasn’t really blogging very much. Now that I have done a little bit of blogging, I can look at this program now, and I do see the benefits of it.
